In one sentence
Backspace shows ads so that it can stay free and subscription-free; the ad network never receives your photos, your videos, or anything derived from them.
Who serves the ads
Ads are served by Google AdMob, a service of Google Ireland Limited. It is the only network used. No other company displays ads inside Backspace, and no mediation platform is connected.
What the network receives, and what it does not
It receives nothing that comes from your photo library. No image, no thumbnail, no fingerprint, no file name, no capture date, no dimension, no item identifier. That data never leaves your phone, in any form, including for diagnostic purposes.
It receives what an ad SDK usually receives, as described in Google's own documentation: an advertising identifier, the device model, the system version, the language, an approximation of the geographic area, and whether an ad was shown or tapped.
Your choice, and how to change it
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, Backspace shows you a consent form when the analysis of your photo library begins. There you choose between personalised and non-personalised advertising.
Your choice is not final. You can change it at any time, without reinstalling the app:
If you decline personalisation, or if the form cannot be displayed, the app keeps working exactly the same and explicitly asks the network for non-personalised ads.
Where ads appear, and where they never do
There are five placements, and no others exist:
| Where | Form | |---|---| | While your library is being analysed | A square, below the progress indicator | | On the home screen and while sorting | A banner at the bottom of the screen | | Returning home after a deletion | A full-screen ad, at most one per session | | On a button you tap yourself | A video, which pre-selects items | | When you open the app | A full-screen ad, from the fourth opening onwards |
Three places never carry one, and they are the ones that matter:
- the confirmation screen, the one that precedes every deletion;
- during a deletion, until it has finished;
- when a session resumes an interrupted deletion. If the app was closed while it was moving items to the trash, the next session shows no ads at all, of any kind.
The video that pre-selects items never deletes anything: it leaves you on the same confirmation screen as usual, where you approve or cancel.
Removing ads
The one-off "No ads" purchase removes advertising entirely, immediately and without a restart. It is a one-time purchase: there is no subscription in Backspace, in any form.
Once that purchase is made, no ad consent form is presented to you: there is no longer any advertising to consent to.
What ads never gate
No feature of Backspace depends on watching an ad. The number of items you can sort is unlimited, and there is no per-session, per-day or per-month counter. The rewarded video saves gestures, nothing else.
Google's partners
The list of companies that may process data through AdMob is maintained by Google and changes independently of us. It can be viewed from the consent form itself, in the section that details advertising partners.
