In one sentence

Backspace collects none of your photos, none of your videos, and has no server. Everything the app computes, it computes on your phone.

What Backspace does with your photos

The app reads your photo library to suggest what you could delete. That reading serves three purposes, and nothing else:

• building a local index: system identifier, date, size, type, dimensions;
• computing a fingerprint of each image, a 64-bit number that makes it possible to recognise two visually close photos;
• measuring sharpness and detecting the presence of faces, in order to pick the best photo of a burst.

These computations happen entirely on your device. The face-detection model is bundled inside the app: it is never downloaded, and no image is ever sent anywhere other than your phone's own memory.

No image, no thumbnail and no fingerprint ever leaves your device, in any form, including for diagnostics. The app's complete journey works without a network connection — advertising is the only thing that needs one.

The index is stored in the app's private storage. You can erase it at any time from Settings › Reset the index, and uninstalling removes it entirely.

What Backspace does not do

• No account, no sign-up, no identification.
• No server, no synchronisation, no online backup.
• No sending of a photo, a thumbnail, a file name, a fingerprint or a location.
• No third-party library has access to your photo library: only Backspace's own internal component opens the system photo library.
• No reading of the location recorded inside your photos. The corresponding permission is explicitly refused by the app.

Deletion

Backspace never deletes permanently. The items you confirm are moved to your phone's trash by the Android system mechanism, and stay recoverable for 30 days from your device's Photos app. Backspace has no technical means of permanently deleting a file, and does not ask for the permission to do so.

Every deletion goes through a confirmation screen that names the number of items and their destination, then through the Android system dialog, which asks you a second time.

Advertising

The app is free and funded by advertising. Ads are served by Google AdMob.

What Google's SDK may collect, independently of us: advertising identifier, IP address, device information and app usage data. Those processing operations are Google's, and are described in Google's privacy policy: https://policies.google.com/privacy.

What the advertising SDK never receives from us: any data derived from the content of your photo library. No item identifier, no file name, no capture date, no fingerprint, no thumbnail, no photo count.

Your consent is requested when the first analysis starts, through Google's form (UMP). Refusing prevents nothing: the app works identically, with non-personalised advertising. You can revisit that choice at any time from Settings › Advertising consent.

The one-time «No ads» purchase removes all advertising from the app, with no subscription and no renewal.

Purchases

Purchases are handled by Google Play. Backspace never sees your payment method and keeps no payment data. Only the «purchased / not purchased» state is stored locally on your device.

Analytics

As of this version, no usage data is transmitted to any analytics tool. Should that change, this document would be updated before the release concerned is published, and the Google Play declaration with it.

Children

Backspace is not intended for children and is not addressed to them. The app does not take part in the Google Play for Families programme.

Your rights

We collect no personal data about you: we therefore have nothing to disclose, correct or erase. For the data Google processes for advertising purposes, address Google, or withdraw your consent from Settings › Advertising consent.

Processing falls under Tunisian law no. 2004-63 of 27 July 2004 on the protection of personal data. For users located in the European Union, GDPR rights are exercised at the same address; since the only personal data at stake is what Google processes for advertising, exercising those rights goes in practice through Google or through withdrawing consent in the app.
